A Legacy of Visionary Education Since 1946

Shrimant Maisaheb Bavdekar School was established in 1946 in Kolhapur as the first Montessori Balmandir in South Maharashtra, marking a historic milestone in early childhood education in the region. The institution was founded by Shrimant Maisaheb Bavdekar (born 4 December 1915), a visionary educationist from the esteemed Sardar Raste family of Pune. She was married in 1935 to Parshuramrao alias Bhausaheb Bavdekar Pant Amatya, the Jahagirdar of Gaganbavda. After the untimely demise of her husband in 1942, Maisaheb chose to dedicate her life to education.

Educational Philosophy & Montessori Movement
Maisaheb pursued advanced studies in education under Maria Montessori in Ahmedabad and Italy. Upon her return, she introduced scientifically developed Montessori education to South Maharashtra—an entirely new concept in the region at the time. In 1950, Madam Montessori herself visited the school and, impressed by its progress and methodology, affectionately referred to it as the “Little Montessori of India.” Maisaheb also worked tirelessly to strengthen the Montessori movement in Maharashtra alongside eminent educationists such as Tarabai Modak and Anutai Wagh.

Growth & Institutional Development
1946 – Montessori Balmandir established
1962 – Primary School started
1987 – High School established
Initially named Sou. Nalini Shantarampant Walawalkar Prashala
Renamed Shrimant Maisaheb Bavdekar Vidyalaya in 2006
In 1975, Maisaheb, along with fellow trustees, founded the Shri Pant Amatya Bal Vikas Vishwastha Nidhi Trust to manage and guide the schools. Under the trust’s leadership, the institutions earned a strong reputation for academic excellence, discipline, and value-based education.

Awards & Social Contribution
During her lifetime, Shrimant Maisaheb Bavdekar trained countless teachers and empowered many women to establish pre-primary schools across South Maharashtra. She was honored with several prestigious awards, including:
FIE Foundation Award
Bal Shikshan Parishad Award
Kolhapur Bhushan Award
And many other recognitions for her contribution to education.

Modern Era & English-Medium Expansion
After Maisaheb’s demise in 2004, the trustees envisioned expanding into English-medium education:
2006 – Tulips Pre-Primary School launched
2008 – Shrimant Maisaheb Bavdekar Academy established
The Academy follows a blended curriculum:
CBSE curriculum for Mathematics, Science, and English
SSC curriculum for other subjects
The school is gradually transitioning from Marathi medium to Semi-English, catering to modern educational needs while preserving cultural roots.
